original Santa Catarina Palopo, Guatemalan huipil. This is an original huipil from the Kakchiquel village of Santa Catarina Palopo on Lake Atitlan in the traditional style. This is an original huipil with the red base cloth as opposed to the blues seen today. It was woven on a back-strap loom in 3 panels and joined with a decorative randa. 25" from shoulder to bottom of huipil (side seams sewn closed) on each side x 28" wide. This was most likely a huipil for a young teenager and an added piece of black cloth was added to give it more length. The head opening is small but can be expanded by loosening the seams in front and back of opening. Very good condition and excellent example of the people, birds, deer and geometric figures you can continue to see in their newer huipiles.
