Maximón is a revered folk saint in Guatemala, especially amongst the large Mayan population. He's also known as San Simon and is often depicted as a man in a suit, hat, and with a cigarette dangling from his lips. He is considered a trickster figure, known for his vices like drinking and smoking, but also for his ability to grant favors and protect those who seek his help. He is not to be taken lightly.
Maximón's origins are complex, blending pre-Columbian Mayan beliefs with Catholic traditions. He is seen as a figure who can bridge the gap between the traditional and the Christian world. He is often associated with Santiago Atitlan, a town on the shores of Lake Atitlan where he is moved from house to house every several months (as it is an honor to host him) and people come to ask healings of him.
Sitting in his chair, this rustic Maximon from Chichicastenango, is 7" tall.
