Juan Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru in 1579, the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and his mother was a freed slave from Panama possibly of African descent. San Martin is known for working for the poor and established an orphanage and a children's hospital. He lived an austere lifestyle, fasting and abstaining from meat.
